Palma airport works: PP demands firm end dates

Passengers and workers at Palma Airport face continuing disruption from terminal works, with the PP demanding firm dates for them to end. On Saturday, the party called for Aena president Maurici Lucena to appear before the Joint Commission for Insularity in Parliament over the management of the Balearic airports. It also wants Aena to give concrete investment commitments and maintain coordination with the Balearic Government, island councils and town halls.

The PP says planned investment and expansion at the three airports have been announced without dialogue or agreement with the islands’ institutions. It argues that growing airport capacity clashes with efforts by regional and island authorities to manage tourism.

Ibiza wastewater and Maó control tower

On Ibiza, the party wants answers over reported discharges from the airport’s wastewater treatment plant into the Torrent de sa Font. The stream runs towards the area around es Codolar and the ses Salines Natural Park.

More than a dozen environmental, social and neighbourhood groups have reported discharges containing faecal contamination, according to the PP. The party has asked when Aena, the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Ministry of Transport first knew of the situation; what inspections and tests were carried out; what corrective action was taken; and whether the stream, groundwater, es Codolar or ses Salines have been affected.

The PP also wants Aena to show that the Ibiza Airport treatment plant can cope with current activity before discussing any airport expansion.

On Menorca, it is seeking an unambiguous pledge that the physical control tower at Maó Airport will remain, rather than being replaced by a remote system. The party says air safety and Menorca’s island position must come before savings.

Palma terminal works under scrutiny

The party is seeking detailed information on the extended terminal works, particularly at Palma Airport. It says passengers and staff should not be left indefinitely dealing with disruption, improvised arrangements and possible risks.

Aena must set clear deadlines for completion, the PP says. It is also demanding specific commitments, deadlines and investment plans from Lucena as it presses for changes to the airport operator’s policy across the Balearics.
