Palma memorial shut on All Saints’ Day sparks row
In Palma, Mallorca, the Memorial de la Dignidad at the city cemetery stayed shut on All Saints’ Day: its closure now sparks a row in the Balearic regional parliament. On Tuesday, 3 November, PSIB MP Omar Lamín challenged Balearic regional minister Antonia Estarellas over the closure. Estarellas says the memorial is a private space and no one asked for it to open.
Lamín accuses the regional government of turning its back on families and remembrance groups. He says the groups have left working committees because the government does not listen to them. He also accuses the government of seeking to please its far-right partners.
Estarellas rejects the claim that families have been sidelined. She says the government has involved families and remembrance groups in its policies throughout its term, and accuses the PSIB of using remembrance for party political ends.
