Palma beer row: Es Jardí defends its 400ml cups

A 400 ml beer order is at the centre of a row at Es Jardí in Palma, Mallorca. The festival said on Friday, 4 September, that its reusable cups hold the amount shown on its drinks list. The statement follows a complaint by the Balearic consumer group Consubal, which says the festival may be serving less beer than advertised.

Consubal has taken its complaint to the Balearic Government's Directorate General for Benefits, Pharmacy and Consumer Affairs. Es Jardí rejects the allegation and says it chose and bought the cups specifically for a 400 ml capacity.

The organisers say their own checks found that the cups can hold 400 ml. They released a video showing 400 ml of drink being poured into one until it is full, along with the supplier's invoice.

Es Jardí says the amount a cup can hold is different from the level at which beer is poured. It says a gap at the top helps with serving, carrying and drinking without spills, while beer poured under pressure also creates foam.

The festival says it will cooperate fully if authorities seek further information. It also says the claim is already harming its reputation and has reserved the right to take legal action to protect its commercial interests.
