Palma: 108 buildings proposed for heritage protection
Mallorca’s capital, Palma, has 108 old summer houses and traditional homes on a proposed protection list. On 19 October, the Association for the Revitalisation of Old Town Centres (ARCA) and Son Quint Parque Natural submitted a study to Palma City Council seeking protection for buildings in Son Rapinya, Son Serra, Sa Vileta and Son Roca. Seven houses already have a particular level of protection; the proposal adds another 101.
The groups considered each building’s architecture, social history and historical setting. Their list includes Can Comelles in Son Rapinya and Can Fiol in Son Serra. Some of the buildings are for sale.
ARCA has also sent the council more than 1,000 signatures collected in July after the destruction of Cas Coronel. It is calling for urgent action to prevent the building’s disappearance and broader criteria for preserving Palma’s heritage. Son Quint Parque Natural wants the neighbourhood’s historic country estates to survive. The council has received the proposal; the buildings have not been granted new protection.
