Palma bus plan puts residents with cards first

Card-holding residents would board Palma’s EMT buses before tourists under a new PSOE proposal. The party unveiled the plan on Wednesday, 16 September, during Mobility Week. Its mayoral candidate, Iago Negueruela, says it would protect a public service for people who rely on it.

The short-term measure would apply to holders of TIB or Única cards. They would be allowed on first, with tourists following afterwards. Negueruela says the priority is for people travelling to work or medical appointments.

He pointed to workers heading to the airport who find bus stops full of tourists. A late arrival at work can cause a real problem, he said, while a tourist arriving later in Palma does not face the same consequence.

Negueruela accused the mayor of strengthening services aimed at tourists during a summer he described as heavily overcrowded, while failing to consider workers. He said public transport was not meeting what residents needed.

The PSOE says the boarding priority would be only one immediate step. It also wants more buses and new ways of managing mobility in Palma. The party pointed to Venice, where it says a similar measure is already in use after serious overcrowding and residents’ protests.
