Mallorca cathedral steps shut as cracks prompt checks
Mallorca’s cathedral steps in Palma are temporarily closed on 6 November 2026: the city council is checking their condition after cracks appeared and specialists warned that the structure was in poor shape. The steps run from the Dalt Murada promenade to the Cathedral of Mallorca.
The checks will cover the whole staircase complex, not just the places where cracks have appeared. The council says the complex has gone without the necessary maintenance for 30 years, but says there is no risk of collapse. It wants the findings to guide work that will keep the structure in good condition for several more years.
The council has included money to fix the faults in its proposed 2027 budget, which still needs approval. It has not said when the steps will reopen.
