Palma backs Ceuta president for EU committee seat
Palma, Mallorca, backs a move to give Ceuta’s president a seat on a European Union advisory committee: Mayor Jaime Martínez voiced his support at a meeting in Madrid on Tuesday, 29 September.
At the meeting of the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces, its president, María José García-Pelayo, formally gave up her seat on the European Committee of the Regions. The move is intended to make room for Ceuta’s president, Juan Jesús Vivas, Palma City Council said. The committee brings together local and regional representatives from EU member states, giving Vivas a place to set out Ceuta’s situation.
The federation’s governing board agreed to the move. It will send the decision to Spain’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation for further processing with EU institutions. Vivas has not yet taken the seat.
The meeting also turned to council funding. The federation wants reform of local funding to move forward alongside changes to funding for Spain’s autonomous communities. García-Pelayo has raised the request with Finance Minister Arcadi España, seeking to get work on local funding reform started at the next meeting of the National Commission for Local Administration.
