Palma church: 300-person venue opens Thursday

Palma, Mallorca, gets a new church complex with room for 300 people when Sant Pau de Son Dameto holds its official opening on Thursday, 24 September. The 500-square-metre site sits above Son Dameto Park. Bishop of Mallorca Sebastià Taltavull will lead the 19.30 service, which includes the consecration and blessing of the new church.

The parish presented the complex on Tuesday after work that began in October 2024. The project has a budget of nearly two million euros.

Solar power and parking for neighbours

The scheme was developed after the parish marked its 50th anniversary in 2023 and reviewed the needs of a neighbourhood that had grown considerably. A land-swap agreement made the construction possible.

Solar panels are intended to make the complex self-sufficient. The building also uses brass details and earth finishes applied on site.

There are 24 parking spaces: 14 underground and ten at ground level. The parish plans to rent them to people living in the neighbourhood, with the income helping to maintain the complex.

Church doors open towards the park

A second building remains on hold for a later phase. Its planned plot has instead been turned into a large outdoor terrace with a pergola for meetings and activities.

Fully opening doors link the worship space to the entrance terrace, allowing the church to open out towards Son Dameto Park. Terraces and gardens are intended for parish and neighbourhood association activities.

The grounds include native species, alongside olive, fig and apple trees, vines, dwarf palms and cypresses. The parish and the Son Dameto-Son Pisà neighbourhood association have worked together since the association was founded in 1991, including on a Spanish school for foreign people, childcare and solidarity bazaars.

The new complex is set to continue the parish’s worship, pastoral, educational and community work while strengthening its link with the neighbourhood.
