Palma crash drug find leads to two arrests

Two people were arrested after a drug find following a motorcycle crash on Calle General Riera in Palma on Monday. National Police officers called to the scene at about 07.30 found a man and woman injured on the road, with their motorcycle parked beside them. The man is also accused of driving without a licence, while the woman is suspected of attacking an officer after the arrests.

Officers requested an ambulance and went to help the pair. The man was wearing a waist bag but would not remove it and, police said, was uncooperative.

Inside the bag, officers found many empty plastic sachets, three small bags of pink powder and other drug-related items. A compartment on the motorcycle held a backpack containing what police believe were tools for making synthetic psychoactive substances, including a small electric hotplate, a 1,000-millilitre container of serum, liquids with a dropper and a glass container of clear liquid.

Police said they seized one bag of marijuana and three bags of tussi, the name used for the pink powdered substance, as well as items allegedly used to make and distribute drugs.

While being treated in the ambulance, the man told an officer that the drugs were for his own use and that he made the substances himself, according to police. He also said he carried materials and substances to parties he attended.

The motorcycle had been rented by the woman. She told officers the man sometimes paid her to take him to different places on it, and said she knew he might be dealing drugs but did not know whether he was carrying any at the time of the crash. She also said he had been riding the motorcycle shortly beforehand.

Police then established that the man did not hold a driving licence. Both were arrested on suspicion of drug trafficking. The man also faces an alleged road-safety offence, while the woman was additionally detained on suspicion of assaulting an officer.
