Palma cannabis test: driver has no licence

A 47-year-old van driver in Palma, Mallorca, is being investigated after police found he had no valid licence and a roadside saliva test indicated cannabis use. Officers stopped the vehicle outside number 15 on Calle Antoni Marquès on 14 September. The Policía Local de Palma has sent the sample for laboratory analysis.

The motorbike unit was carrying out document checks when it randomly stopped the van. The Argentine driver told officers he had lost all the points on his licence, but said he was driving for work. Traffic records confirmed that the document was no longer valid.

Officers then noticed a strong smell of cannabis from both the driver and the van’s interior. Police said he admitted to being a regular user and to having smoked drugs at midday.

If the laboratory result confirms the initial test, police will file an administrative report. The van was also registered to someone else and had failed Spain’s vehicle inspection, known as the ITV, so officers immobilised it.

The registered owner told police by phone that he had lent the van to the man and did not know he no longer had a valid licence. The traffic police unit has sent the case papers to the judicial authority.
