Palma election: PSOE picks two leads for 2027 plan

With 37 weeks left before the election, Palma’s Socialist Party, PSOE, has put architect Cristina Llorente and physicist Carles Bona in charge of shaping its 2027 manifesto. The party wants to win back the mayor’s office from the current city administration. It announced the appointments at a political council meeting in Palma on 5 September.

PSOE Palma leader and town hall candidate Iago Negueruela said the party would answer what he called right-wing hate speech with practical proposals. He said the programme needed two different outlooks: Llorente’s work on neighbourhoods and urban planning, and Bona’s knowledge of Palma and climate action.

Negueruela put overcrowding, intense heat, impossibly priced homes, collapsed mobility and cuts to public services at the centre of the campaign. He said people had taken to the streets over problems including overcrowding during the summer, while Mayor Jaime Martínez had focused his message on events in Ceuta.

The party will hold a municipal political conference to settle its housing proposals. Negueruela also accused the city government of bringing in high-profile architects to promote Palma while pushing local people out — an allegation made by the PSOE.

Llorente has led Arquitectives since 2009 and is secretary of Palma XXI. The party highlights her work in urban planning, public policy and citizens’ rights. Bona, a doctor of physics at the University of the Balearic Islands and a PSOE member of the Balearic Parliament, is expected to bring research and climate expertise to the plan.

PSIB deputy secretary-general Rosario Sánchez said the coming 37 weeks would decide not only the party’s opposition work but the future of Palma and the islands.
