Palma stabbing: court holds minor in youth centre

A youth court in Palma has ordered a minor into a youth detention centre after a fatal stabbing in Calle Indalecio Prieto. The arrest followed a Sunday-night attack in which a young man suffered an open, bleeding wound to his chest and later died in hospital. The National Police say the minor is suspected of homicide.

Several calls to 091 at about 22.50 reported that a young man had been stabbed and was lying in the street. Patrols found people gathered around him, while a member of the public pressed a T-shirt to the wound. An ambulance then treated the victim, carried out resuscitation and took him to hospital, where he died hours later.

Row turned into a fight

Witnesses told officers that an argument had escalated into a fight in a nearby alley, where the stabbing took place. The victim then collapsed and the attacker ran away.

Police searched the area for the suspect and the weapon but found neither a weapon nor any object that could have caused the injury. At about 01.00, a patrol found a young person in Orson Wells Park who matched the description given by witnesses. Officers said the suspect appeared agitated and was shaking before they made the arrest.

Homicide squad continues inquiry

The National Police Homicide Squad is taking witness statements and investigating what happened. Officers established only afterwards that the detained person was a minor because no identity documents were being carried.

Police sent the case file to the Juvenile Prosecutor's Office, and the youth court has now ordered the minor to be held in a detention centre.
