Mallorca flat fire: five in hospital, around 120 out
Mallorca: A seventh-floor flat fire in Palma sends five people to hospital and forces around 120 people out of their building on 1 October. It breaks out at around 06.15 in a ten-storey block on Francesc Fiol i Joan street, in the s’Escorxador neighbourhood. Emergency services receive several calls about thick smoke, with callers warning that people may still be inside.
Three siblings rescued from the flat
Local Police officers and firefighters rescue three siblings, aged around 60 to 70, from the flat. Paramedics treat them and two officers who took part in the rescue, then take all five to Son Espases University Hospital.
All five have inhaled smoke, and some have burns. The two officers have since been discharged, according to police. The strength of the fire forces around 120 people living in the building to leave.
Flat gutted as police investigate
The flat is completely burnt out, and fire has also affected the rest of the seventh floor. Initial findings suggest the building’s structure has not been damaged.
Investigators believe the fire may have started in a mattress, but do not yet know what set it alight. Spain’s National Police are investigating.
