Mallorca shops fear damage at Friday's Palma gathering

Mallorca shopkeepers want safeguards for Friday’s gathering in Palma, Mallorca: they fear street-level businesses could be damaged if vandalism breaks out. The gathering has been called through social media. The island’s association of small and medium-sized retailers, Pimeco, says it wants businesses to keep working safely, without assuming there will be trouble.

Why businesses are worried

Pimeco points to vandalism in Barcelona and wants to prevent similar damage in Palma. Its concern covers shops, restaurants, workshops and service businesses. Some have no metal shutters or other physical barriers.

Pimeco president Carolina Domingo says she does not want to cause alarm or suggest that incidents on Friday are certain. Her priority, she says, is a normal working day for small businesses.

What traders want to know

A police deployment is planned, but Pimeco also wants traders told which areas may be affected, whether access could be restricted and how travel might change. Businesses need to know whom to contact if something happens, Domingo says.

Whether to close early is up to each business, Pimeco says. It urges them to follow official guidance and put people’s safety first.
