Mallorca housing camp eviction: MÉS plans complaint

A housing protest camp in Plaza de España in Palma, Mallorca, is gone: Palma Local Police cleared it on Wednesday. On Friday, 6 November, MÉS per Mallorca said it would take the eviction to prosecutors. The party wants them to examine whether the city government overstepped its powers and interfered with the right to assembly.

The camp had been there since 28 September, MÉS says. Its gathering had been reported to the Government Delegation, the authority responsible for the right to assembly. According to the party’s planned complaint, there is no record of an order from that authority to break up the gathering. Camp participants say they received no notice of the eviction either.

MÉS coordinator Lluís Apesteguia says the clearance may have involved offences against the right to assembly and coercion. The party wants prosecutors to find out who ordered the police operation, what legal grounds it had and whether it was intended to stop the protest continuing. It also wants city records and police orders obtained, and footage and operation logs preserved urgently.

David Pujol, MÉS’s candidate for mayor, says removing the tents will not make Palma’s housing problem disappear.
