Mallorca housing protest: Palma tent camp stays put

Mallorca’s housing protest camp remains in Plaza de España in Palma on Thursday, 1 October: the Spanish government’s representative office for the Balearic Islands says it will not clear the tents. Palma City Council wants the camp brought to an end. The government office says it is temporary and has disrupted neither public order nor public services.

The council asked the office to act on Thursday. Government representative Alfonso Rodríguez then spoke to Palma’s mayor, Jaime Martínez, around midday.

The tents followed a rally on Monday for the right to housing. Its organisers had warned the government office that the gathering might become a camp. The office says the protest is covered by the right to assembly.

The National Police are watching the camp to protect public safety but have no plans to intervene. Protester Joan Segura says no one has told the group it cannot stay. He says members take turns resting rather than regularly sleeping there, and that the square is clean and no street furniture has been damaged.
