Palma housing protest camp plans to stay until strike

Palma, Mallorca: a housing protest camp enters its fourth week, and organisers plan to keep it going until a general strike on 11 November. On Wednesday 21 October, the group accused parties in the Balearic Parliament of ignoring concerns raised on the streets as a general policy debate continued. It says political proposals favour property owners and the real estate sector over tenants.

Housing concerns beyond parliament

Camp spokespeople say the debate in parliament bears little resemblance to the conversations at neighbourhood meetings across Palma. They warn that housing is becoming a luxury and that more people face housing insecurity and eviction.

The group has urged Balearic Government president Marga Prohens to listen to the public rather than property interests. Its spokespeople say the camp is not aligned with any political party.

Camp shifts towards the strike

Participants are reorganising shifts so they can keep the camp running alongside work, family and other commitments. They also plan to spend more time at neighbourhood meetings and preparing for the strike.

After 11 November, the group will decide whether to keep the camp in place. It says it could remain until the general election scheduled for 29 November.
