Palma jobs: July total hits 294,136, 20-year high

Palma’s Social Security register reached 294,136 people in July, its highest total for that month in 20 years. The figure was 3.7% above July 2025 and 0.63% higher than in June. Palma City Council said the city accounted for 42.5% of all Social Security registrations in the Balearic Islands.

July’s unemployment rate was 3.89%, the lowest recorded for that month since unified data began. Lupe Ferrer, Palma’s councillor for commerce, restaurants and the self-employed, and president of PalmaActiva, said the figures reinforced job creation in the capital.

August contracts

Palma recorded 12,447 contracts in August. Of those, 6,965 were permanent and 5,482 temporary.

Permanent hiring fell 32.54% from July but was 27.7% above the level a year earlier. Hotels accounted for the most contracts, with 3,162, followed by commerce with 1,791.

Among women, cleaners received 1,057 contracts and waitresses 848. For men, waiters led with 857 contracts, followed by creative artists with 355.

Unemployment edges up from July

The number of people registered as unemployed in Palma rose by 233 in August to 12,142, up 1.96% on July. The total included 5,163 men and 6,979 women.

It was still 132 lower than in August last year, a fall of 1.08%. Over the year, unemployment fell 1.68% among women and 4.24% among people over 45, but rose 4.48% among young people.

Agriculture saw the sharpest annual fall in unemployment, down 10.83%, followed by commerce, down 9.55%.
