The lorry and the cars blocked the middle and right-hand lanes. Guardia Civil officers arrested the 63-year-old driver after an alcohol breath test returned a positive result.

Five taken to three hospitals

SAMU 061 took five people to Son Espases, Son Llàtzer and Juaneda hospitals. Two suffered less serious injuries and three had minor injuries.

Another 12 people received medical attention at the scene and were discharged there.

Inquiry into multi-vehicle crash

The Guardia Civil Traffic Group is investigating the circumstances of the collision. Sources close to the inquiry said one possible cause is that the driver lost control of the lorry because he was intoxicated.

He was arrested on suspicion of an offence against road safety and serious disobedience. Traffic on the Ma-13 returned to normal after emergency crews finished their work and the vehicles were removed.
