Palma noise row: 60 dB on Friday, music over 3 days

Music from sa Feixina park in Palma registered up to 60 decibels inside some nearby homes on Friday, according to neighbourhood group Barri Cívic. The verbena ran from 20.00 to 02.00 during the Mare de Déu de la Salut celebrations. Barri Cívic, which represents Santa Catalina and Es Jonquet, says music continued on Saturday and Sunday.

The group says it wrote to Palma City Council at the end of August to ask what noise limits had been approved and what checks were planned. It says no reply has arrived.

Calls for a noise check

Residents called the Local Police during Friday's event and specifically asked the Patrulla Verde noise-control unit to take a reading, Barri Cívic says. The group says nobody attended.

Callers were not told the permitted noise limit or given an incident number, it adds. They were told they would need to go to the police station in person to have the calls recorded.

Music continues through Sunday

Barri Cívic says Saturday brought a popular festival by the Chilean community, followed by more music on Sunday. It says the park beneath residents' windows is repeatedly being used as an open-air concert venue for three consecutive days.

The association says it does not oppose celebrations changing over time. But it objects to a residential park becoming a dance floor, with the surrounding homes left to bear the noise. It argues that Palma has other venues for concerts and large events that would cause less disturbance to residents.
