Mallorca: Palma plans padel courts in €31.3m sports budget
Palma, Mallorca, plans two new padel courts in Sant Jordi under a €31.3 million sports budget proposal for 2027. The boards of the Municipal Sports Institute and PalmaActiva approved their draft budgets on Friday, 23 October. PalmaActiva’s proposal totals €8.6 million.
The sports institute’s draft includes €2.7 million for investment in facilities. In Sant Jordi, the plans add a bodyweight exercise area and a multi-sport court alongside the padel courts. At Germans Escalas sports centre, the first phase of a refurbishment would repair the pools, carry out structural work and rearrange the changing rooms and gym. A covered hockey facility is planned for Verge de Lluc, while part of the work on the Son Moix athletics track is expected to go out to tender in 2027.
The sports proposal also sets aside €890,000 for grants. The city says longer opening hours at sports facilities and the opening of s’Aigua Dolça are driving up running costs. PalmaActiva’s draft puts nearly €1.5 million towards employment, training and the local economy. Grants to help small and medium-sized shops modernise would rise to €280,000, from €200,000 in the 2026 budget. Both budgets remain drafts.
