Palma public homes: Vox puts city ties first

Public and protected homes in Palma, Mallorca, could be allocated through a points system that gives greater weight to an applicant’s proven, lasting ties to the city. Vox has put forward the change in eight amendments to the planned reform of Palma’s Capitality Law. The party filed them on 11 September.

Under the proposal, applicants would be assessed on their registration history in Palma, Spanish nationality or legal residence, income and ownership of other homes. The lack of convictions for certain housing-related offences would also count.

Applications could be refused over false or withheld information, missing compulsory documents or failure to meet the conditions for public housing.

Vox parliamentary spokeswoman Manuela Cañadas said public housing was limited and should be awarded using “fair, objective and transparent” criteria. She argued that someone with years of registered residence in Palma should not be treated in the same way as someone who signed up only months earlier.

Spanish or Catalan at Palma City Council

Another amendment would let people deal with Palma City Council in either Spanish or Catalan. They would receive council communications and replies in the official language they choose.

The proposal says all council staff would need the language skills to serve people in both languages. Nobody could be asked to switch language, and their choice could not lead to delays or discrimination.

Vox also wants Palma City Council’s responsibilities to come with the funding needed to carry them out.
