Mallorca rally: Government seeks more police in Palma
On Mallorca, the Balearic government wants more police in Palma for a gathering on Friday, with special attention paid to a station used by an average of 45,000 people a day. A group believed to have links to the Blocus movement has announced the gathering. Deputy president Antònia Maria Estarellas has written to the Spanish government’s delegation in the Balearic Islands, warning of possible violent incidents.
Estarellas wants officers and equipment ready to prevent trouble and respond quickly if violence occurs. She has called for clear instructions for police, more work to identify possible flashpoints and close coordination with Palma’s local police. She also wants police in other Mallorca municipalities involved if there are signs of gatherings or violent incidents there.
Her letter points to recent events in Barcelona and other Spanish and European cities as a reason to prepare. It gives no details of those events.
Estarellas has singled out Palma’s Intermodal station in the city centre. The government describes it as a key point in Mallorca’s public transport network. It has not said whether services there will face any restrictions.
