Palma, Mallorca, gains a sister city: mayor Jaime Martínez signs a deal with Santa Cruz de Tenerife, in the Canary Islands, on Thursday, 8 October. Santa Cruz mayor José Manuel Bermúdez signs alongside him at the city’s municipal hall, Palma City Council says. The agreement sets out plans for joint initiatives and stronger cultural, social and economic ties.

The idea came from three Santa Cruz residents who proposed the partnership in December 2024. The cities already have personal and historical links. Many families of Balearic origin live in Santa Cruz, while Palma-born Valeriano Weyler y Nicolau served as captain-general of the Canary Islands and pushed for the construction of the military headquarters there.

Tourism and hospitality are two areas where the cities see scope to work together. Businesses and organisations from both cities met during the visit. Bermúdez said he wanted the cooperation to continue and hoped the two mayors could meet again soon, this time in Palma.
