Palma, Mallorca: the Balearic government approves up to €46.87 million on Friday, 6 November, for a new sewage outfall running across land and under water from the Palma II wastewater treatment plant. The funding will go through the city’s utility, Emaya. The project is part of planned improvements to Palma’s wastewater system.

How the Palma project will be funded

Of the approved amount, €39.69 million covers the design, construction and supervision of the works. A further €7.18 million covers estimated financing costs. The money will come from a wastewater levy and be spread across the 2027 to 2036 budgets.

The project falls under an agreement Emaya signed in February 2023 with the state-owned company Aguas de las Cuencas de España. A later phase to build treatment lines 5 and 6 has an estimated budget of €22 million and will need a separate funding request.

Funding for Sant Llorenç

The government also approves four million euros for Sant Llorenç des Cardassar, Mallorca. It will help the municipal company Bellver cover the operation, upkeep and maintenance of the town’s wastewater treatment service from 2027 to 2029.

That continues funding approved for 2024 to 2026. The new spending reaches into the 2030 budget because each December’s costs are paid the following January.
