Mallorca sports fair opens 180 free activities

More than 180 free sports activities are under way at Son Moix in Palma, Mallorca, this Saturday as the venue marks 50 years. More than 100 clubs and sporting federations are taking part across the complex for the whole weekend. Palma mayor Jaime Martínez opened the fair, organised by the city’s Municipal Sports Institute.

Visitors can try athletics, cycling, football, rugby, handball, tennis, badminton, 3x3 basketball, martial arts and adapted sport, alongside many other disciplines. The pools are hosting water polo, swimming, diving, canoeing, breath-hold diving and introductory scuba sessions. The Guardia Civil is also staging an underwater rescue display.

Children’s activities include skill and navigation courses, karting and remote-control vehicles. The Guardia Civil, National Police, Palma Fire Brigade and the military are displaying vehicles and emergency equipment. Inside the sports hall, competitions and demonstrations are running while three stages host Pilates, Deka Fire, Body Combat, Zumba, Fit Dance, yoga, spinning, swing and other exercise and dance sessions.

The fair has returned to city organisation after 13 years; its first edition was held in 2001. It coincides with the 50th anniversary of the Municipal Sports Palace, officially opened on 17 September 1976. An outdoor exhibition traces Son Moix from its construction to today through photographs by Torrelló, Joan Torres, Vives and Lorenzo Frau.

Son Moix has hosted events including the 1977 Copa del Rey tennis tournament, the 1978 European skating championship, the 1993 swimming world championship, the 1999 Universiade and the 2004 triathlon world championship. Palma City Council says it has invested more than €1.1 million in modernising the complex during this legislative term, including a new removable parquet floor in 2025, LED lighting and an upgraded sound system.
