Palma stabbing: police hold second teen after 19-year-old dies

A 19-year-old man has died after a stabbing in Son Gotleu, Palma, Mallorca, on Sunday night. National Police have arrested a second minor they say may be linked to the killing. Another minor, detained hours after the attack, has been sent to an internment centre by a youth court.

Several calls reached the 091 emergency line at about 22.50, reporting that a young man was on the ground with an open, bleeding chest wound. Officers found people gathered around him in Calle Indalecio Prieto, where a member of the public was pressing a T-shirt against the wound.

Paramedics treated the man, attempted resuscitation and took him to hospital. He died hours later.

Search follows reports of a fight

Witnesses told detectives there had been an argument and a fight before the stabbing in a nearby alley. The victim then collapsed and the attacker ran away.

Officers searched the area for the attacker and the weapon but found neither. At about 01.00, a patrol spotted a young person in Orson Wells Park who matched witnesses' description. Police arrested him on suspicion of homicide.

The National Police homicide unit is taking witness statements and continuing its investigation, including into the alleged role of the second minor.
