Palma adds 210 taxi licences for 2027 high season
Palma is bringing in 210 temporary taxi licences for the 2027 high season, with a set allocation for adapted vehicles. Palma's Taxi Board approved the call on Wednesday, 9 September. The taxi sector monitoring commission also unanimously set the winter work and rest pattern from 1 November to 31 March.
Drivers will work for three consecutive days, followed by two consecutive days off. Each shift starts at 06.00, with drivers returning at the same time on the day after their rest period ends.
Extra taxis on busy nights
The rest rule will not apply between 22.00 and 06.00 at weekends and on the eve of public holidays, allowing more taxis onto the streets when demand is higher. Availability will also be increased on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year's Eve and New Year's Day.
Adapted taxis for people with reduced mobility will follow a separate cycle: four consecutive working days, one day on call and one rest day. While on call, they must give priority to people with reduced mobility, particularly for medical journeys.
Licences brought forward
Palma is starting the 2027 licence process earlier than usual. It normally runs between January and March, but the earlier timetable is intended to give applicants more time to submit their papers and help plan the next high season.
Mobility councillor Toni Deudero said more than 600 taxi drivers had joined the sector. Palma City Council said changes to the exam system had lifted the pass rate in each call from 16 to 50 per cent, allowing licences to be used for more hours through driver changes. The aim is a taxi service available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
