Palma knife attack: man who tried to kill wife avoids jail
In Palma, Mallorca, a man who admits trying to kill his wife with a knife avoids prison despite a two-year sentence handed down on Friday, 16 October. He stabbed her several times as she tried to leave their home during a row over a mobile phone in December 2025. She broke free and took refuge in a neighbour’s home.
The man had picked up the knife and threatened to kill her. The Second Chamber of the Provincial Court announced its ruling orally after prosecutors, the private prosecution and the defence agreed on the sentence. The court treated their family relationship as an aggravating factor, but also took account of his confession and the harm he had made good.
He will stay out of prison if he commits no offence over the next three years and attends a programme against abuse and discrimination. He is barred from coming within 200 metres of his wife or contacting her for five years. His suspended sentence also depends on his obeying those restrictions for three years.
