Palma event puts women at heart of tourism and tech

Women working, building businesses and studying in tourism and technology gathered in Palma, Mallorca, on Wednesday for a new event focused on female talent and innovation. Marga Prohens, president of the Balearic Government, opened the Innovation and Female Talent in Tourism 2026 conference at the Fundación Sa Nostra in Can Tàpera. The meeting brought together professionals, entrepreneurs and students from across the Balearic Islands.

The Balearic Ministry of Economy, Finance and Innovation organised the event with Womenalia, a network of more than 80,000 women across Spain. First vice-president and economy minister Antoni Costa and labour minister Catalina Cabrer also attended.

Prohens said public institutions must give women more opportunities, practical tools, funding and visibility. She stressed the value of networks linking mentors, colleagues, entrepreneurs and senior managers, so they can share experience, knowledge and opportunities.

She called the partnership with Womenalia a starting point and said she hoped Wednesday's meeting would be the first of many.

The president also pointed to measures the government says it is pursuing, including strengthening the innovation network and ParcBit, backing projects such as the Digital Twin, and offering participatory loans for newly created firms and innovative technology projects.

Prohens said women with strong ideas should be able to develop them, find funding, start businesses and create jobs in the islands. She also highlighted the work-life balance law and support for self-employed workers, saying women should not be expected to run a business, innovate, create jobs, raise a family and never fall ill.
