Palma solar power opens to homes and firms until 30 September

Homes, freelancers and firms within five kilometres of ParcBit in Palma can apply for solar power from its car-park canopies until 30 September. The Balearic Government has opened up the remaining capacity after giving priority to businesses at ParcBit. Son Castelló industrial estate is among the areas inside the eligible radius.

The scheme is shared self-consumption: participants use power from one solar installation rather than fitting panels to their own roof. The photovoltaic canopies at the ParcBit car park have a total capacity of 3.6 megawatts. Participants do not need an upfront investment or to take on maintenance.

1,376 kW already reserved

So far, 60 businesses, 21 homes and 20 institutions have reserved 1,376 kilowatts of capacity. The amount assigned to each participant is based on their consumption.

Alejandro Sáenz de San Pedro, the Balearic minister for Business, Self-Employment and Energy, said the response from ParcBit businesses had been good. He said the available capacity could now extend the scheme to more families, freelancers and businesses nearby.

€100 a year for every 1.25 kW

At ParcBit, the annual charge is €100 for each 1.25 kW assigned. The distribution company will automatically deduct the energy used from the electricity bill, with no need to change electricity supplier.

Applications can be made through the Balearic Energy Institute website or in person at any of the Balearic Islands' Energy Transition Offices.
