Mallorca’s Palma seafront is trading traffic lanes for more space to walk, cycle and plant trees: the Paseo Marítimo makeover has won a Spanish sustainable construction prize. The Balearic Islands Port Authority announced on 27 October 2026 that the project took first place in the urban infrastructure category of the Saint-Gobain awards.

Fewer lanes along the seafront

The project covers 3.5 kilometres from Palma’s Porto Pi roundabout to Avenida Argentina, an area of about 190,000 square metres. It cuts the road from three or four lanes to two in each direction, increasing space for pedestrians, cycle lanes and greenery by up to 70%.

More trees, less heat

The plans add more than 1,800 trees, 500 palms and 37,000 square metres of planted beds. The port authority says the planting is intended to ease urban heat. The work also includes LED lighting, new street furniture, accessible play areas and drainage designed to help the seafront cope with climate change.

Work began in November 2022, funded by more than €50 million of the port authority’s own money. During construction, the authority has provided a website and information visits, and held public planting days in May and June 2025.
