Mallorca, in the Balearic Islands, may gain 10 to 12 more places to stay for patients travelling from Menorca, Eivissa and Formentera for treatment: the health department is negotiating a new agreement. Health minister Manuela García told the Balearic Parliament on 13 October 2026 that talks were going well.

More places near the hospital

The department is also looking at ways to provide more accommodation at Son Espases Hospital on Mallorca. It has studied an extension and the use of space inside the hospital.

No new accommodation agreements with other associations have been reached. García said none had applied, and any organisation involved would have to meet quality standards. A previous agreement with the Can Granada care home ended in 2019; she said the home was not interested in restarting it.

Fewer journeys for treatment

García said recruiting and keeping medical staff could help patients receive more care on their home islands. She pointed to the introduction of peritoneal dialysis on Menorca and said patients from that island spent 500 fewer nights on Mallorca in 2024.

Joana Gomila, the Més per Menorca MP who requested García’s appearance in parliament, acknowledged that medical services on the other islands had grown. But they were still “not enough”, she said, calling for more places to stay for patients who must travel to Mallorca.
