Patios Abiertos draws 7,178 to Palma schoolyards
Patios Abiertos brought 7,178 participants to eight school playgrounds in Palma, Mallorca, this summer, after fewer than 5,000 attended during the same period last year. Palma City Council gave the figure on Friday, 18 September. The free scheme opens schoolyards to children, young people and families for play and activities.
The project has run since October 2024 and logged 11,348 attendances in its first full year, the council said. During the school holidays, the playgrounds hosted water games, creative workshops, sport and activities aimed at encouraging people to spend time together.
Most summer attendances were by children who came without an adult. They accounted for 85.4% of participation in June, rising to 86% in July and 87% in August.
The eight participating schools are CEIP Cas Capiscol, CEIP Can Pastilla, CEIP Es Pont, CEIP Gabriel Vallseca, CEIP El Terreno, CEIP Jafudà Cresques, CEIP Joan Capó and CEIP Miquel Porcel.
Since 10 September, the schools have returned to their winter timetable. They open from Monday to Saturday in the afternoons, with hours varying by school and day.
