Palma seeks €61,000 to keep school playgrounds open

Palma on Mallorca is seeking more than €61,000 from the Balearic Government to keep school playgrounds open beyond lesson times. The Patios Abiertos scheme, which opens school yards outside teaching hours, costs about €82,000 this school year. Palma City Council says opening slots will run from Monday to Saturday, according to demand at each school.

The scheme began in October 2024. It drew more than 11,300 participants in its first full year, the council said, followed by 7,178 users during the summer. The council presents the service as support for families balancing work and family life during the school year, while making school facilities available to the community.

One online account for city services

The council has also awarded Intricom Resources a €20,449 contract to supply and run its new Single Electronic Citizen Account, known as CCU. The deal lasts 12 months and can be extended twice, each time for a further 12 months.

The planned web service will bring municipal information, notices and key procedures together in one place. It will link to Palma’s electronic office and the state citizen account, allowing users to update personal details, check municipal records and files, manage notifications, pay outstanding debts and view municipal register information.

Green space planned for Cala Major

Palma has approved a request to Mallorca Council for the free transfer of part of an island-owned plot on Puig de l'Alaró Street. The land, covering about 1,200 square metres, is intended for a new public green space serving Cala Major and Sant Agustí in Palma.

Council spokeswoman Mercedes Celeste said the project answers a long-standing local demand. It follows a letter of intent signed last Tuesday by Palma’s mayor and the president of Mallorca Council, and would add to works in Cala Major and Sant Agustí including renewed streets and pavements, upgraded lighting, a senior centre and an extension of EMT bus line 20.
