Ibiza sea heat: divers find no pen shells at Cala Gració

Divers find no pen shells at Cala Gració on Ibiza this summer, though they spotted them there in previous years. Salvem sa Badia de Portmany links the absence to this year’s high sea temperature, the association says on 7 October.

At the end of September, eight volunteer divers took measurements at two stations in Cala Bassa, also on Ibiza. Four others checked two stations in Cala Gració. The stations are part of Xarxa Posidònia, a network that monitors seagrass beds. A detailed report is still to come, but early observations suggest the beds remain stable.

Salvem sa Badia funds the only seagrass monitoring stations in the Bay of Portmany. A grant from the Ministry of Social Rights and Agenda 2030 covers part of this year’s costs. The first two stations were installed at Cala Gració in 2022, at depths of 6 and 15 metres. The first Cala Bassa station followed the next year; a second monitoring line was added there this year, leaving two in each study area. Salvem sa Badia also paid for a thermometer at the Cala Gració station in 2025, and its readings were collected this year.
