Balearic pensions: 20,099 back minimum-wage top-up

On Mallorca and across the Balearic Islands, 20,099 verified signatures put a proposed pension top-up past the threshold for a citizens’ bill. The Balearic Pension Defence Coordinating Group said on Monday, 5 October, that the Electoral Census Office had confirmed the signatures. Its proposal would bring the lowest public pensions up to the statutory minimum wage, among other measures.

The campaign needed at least 7,500 signatures within four months. Now the group wants the Balearic Parliament to announce urgently that it will process the bill.

The group says 94,000 older people across the islands receive pensions below the minimum wage. It argues that poverty lies behind the islands’ tourist image and that elected representatives must act. The statement gives no date for a decision on the proposal.
