Mallorca pensioners back 11 November general strike

Responsible for this content: Frank Menze

On Mallorca, a pensioners’ group backs the 11 November general strike: it says 37.5 per cent of pensions paid across the Balearic Islands fell below the poverty line in 2025. The Balearic Coordinating Committee for the Defence of Public Pensions urges the public to take part. It says almost half of those below the poverty line were below the extreme poverty threshold.

The group says many pensions do not last until the end of the month. It supports the strike’s demands for decent housing, better and wider public services, and wages and pensions that reflect the real cost of living. Many evictions affect older people on modest pensions, it says. It also warns that worsening healthcare, care services and transport hit pensioners particularly hard.

Pensioners cannot stop work to join the strike, the group says. But they can encourage support in workplaces, boycott spending and join the demonstration on the day of the strike.
