Mallorca neighbours pitch 32 rubbish fixes for Pere Garau

Rubbish bins in Pere Garau, Palma, could be emptied on Sundays and public holidays under a 32-point plan from neighbourhood groups. On Tuesday, 15 September, Flipau amb Pere Garau and Pere Garau Saludable handed the proposals to Palma City Council and Emaya. They want to improve day-to-day life in the district.

The groups say rubbish left out attracts more rubbish and has fed a feeling that people can get away with it on the streets. Their plan calls for more frequent waste collection as well as more regular emptying of litter bins.

Bins designed for older people

The proposals include replacement containers that are easier for older people to use. The groups also want sensors to show how full bins are, allowing rubbish lorry routes to be planned more efficiently.

They are asking for paper, cardboard and plastic to be collected directly from shops in Pere Garau. That would stop businesses competing for room in public containers.

Calls for stronger checks

The pilot plan sets out the main urban problems in Pere Garau, Palma's most populous district. Its backers say the measures could be assessed and, if suitable, used in other parts of Palma.

The groups also want awareness work aimed at all ages. They call for preventative information on rules for second-hand appliance shops and refurbishment firms, alongside campaigns against antisocial behaviour.

They are seeking firmer coordination between Emaya's environmental inspectors and the Local Police to tackle the sense of impunity they say persists in Pere Garau.
