Pons and Rodríguez met on Tuesday to discuss the handover. Pons is due to begin his official schedule on Wednesday at an event in Palma attended by Elma Saiz, Spain’s minister for Inclusion, Social Security and Migration, according to the Government Delegation in the Balearic Islands. His formal taking of office is expected next week.

Born in Palma, Pons served in Spain’s lower house from 2016 to 2023 before becoming a senator. Until now, he has held that seat alongside his role as president of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe.
