Palma, Mallorca, 28 October: Pere Joan Pons takes over as the Spanish government’s representative in the Balearic Islands, replacing Alfonso Rodríguez. Spain’s Official State Gazette publishes Rodríguez’s departure and Pons’s appointment on Wednesday, after the Council of Ministers approved the change on Tuesday.

Pons makes his first appearance in the role on Wednesday at an event attended by Elma Saiz, Spain’s minister for inclusion, social security and migration, during her visit to Palma. Pons and Rodríguez met on Tuesday for a handover, but the formal swearing-in is not expected until next week.

Born in Palma, Pons served in Spain’s lower house from 2016 to 2023 and later became a senator. Rodríguez said in July that he would run again for mayor of Calvià, Mallorca, in the 2027 election.
