Mallorca approves €3.06m PET supply for Son Espases
Mallorca is putting nearly €3.06 million into radioactive medicines needed for PET scans at University Hospital Son Espases in Palma. The Balearic Government approved the purchase on Friday. Spokesman Antoni Costa said the supply is needed for essential diagnostic tests, including positron emission tomography, known as PET.
The order covers doses of fludesoxyglucose and fluoromethylcholine chloride. These medicines are used to diagnose diseases, assess their stage and monitor their progress, with particular importance in cancer care.
A PET scan shows how organs and body tissue are working. Patients receive a small amount of a radioactive medicine, which sends signals picked up by the scanner and turned into images. Health staff can use them to spot disease, assess its development and plan treatment.
The government says a steady supply is essential to keep care at Son Espases running and to preserve patients’ access to these diagnostic tests.
