Mallorca backs €4.68m Petra train station rebuild

Petra train station in Mallorca is set for a €4.68 million rebuild after the Balearic Government cleared Serveis Ferroviaris de Mallorca to put the work out to tender on Friday. The project is expected to take ten months. It includes changes aimed at making the station easier to use and improving the link between private cars and trains.

Deputy government spokeswoman Antònia Maria Estarellas said the overhaul will modernise the station and make it more functional and comfortable for passengers. A solar power installation for the station’s own use is also planned on neighbouring land.

Part of Palma-Manacor rail investment

Serveis Ferroviaris de Mallorca will initially cover the full cost. The budget also includes compensation for any required compulsory purchases and a 1.5% cultural allocation. Funding could later come from the Balearic Islands’ special-regime insularity factor and Feder funds.

The Petra works form part of wider investment on the Palma-Manacor rail corridor. The Balearic Government says a new passing point will help trains cross more easily, raise future service frequency and improve punctuality by giving rail operations more flexibility.
