Mallorca phone theft: Inca suspect caught by selfie
A 54-year-old man needed medical care after a phone theft in Inca, Mallorca, during the early hours of 30 August. A group of unknown people approached him in a street and hit him on the back of the head without speaking, the Guardia Civil said. They took 150 euros, personal belongings, official documents and his mobile phone.
The blow left the man partly unconscious. After he reported the attack, Guardia Civil officers in Inca examined security-camera footage from the route taken by those involved.
They also asked phone operators for technical information linked to the handset’s IMEI number, its unique device identifier. That led them to trace the phone and call in a third person as a witness. The witness gave information about how the handset had changed hands, saying the alleged attacker had sold it to him.
While preparing the phone for return to its owner, officers found digital evidence linked to the suspect: he had taken a photo of himself on the stolen handset. A photographic identification then produced a positive and “unequivocal” result, according to the Guardia Civil.
The man was arrested on suspicion of violent robbery and was brought before a court with the investigation file on Friday morning.
