Mallorca pigeon shoot plans target over 2,000 birds

Mallorca faces a planned shoot involving more than 2,000 domestic pigeons on Sunday 27 September: the birds will be released as targets at the Son Ximena estate in Felanitx, according to animal welfare party Progreso en Verde. The party is demanding checks on the event and answers about what happens to the birds.

What happens to wounded birds?

Party leader Guillermo Amengual calls the shoot cruel entertainment. He says releasing animals to shoot them for sport or recreation has no place in animal protection.

Progreso en Verde wants to know how many pigeons are wounded or killed, what care surviving birds receive and who takes responsibility for any that escape the estate.

Calls for inspections and answers

The party has asked the Mallorca Island Council to release documents relating to the event and arrange an inspection to check compliance with the rules. It wants Felanitx Town Council to disclose any permits or other municipal paperwork, explain its checks and act if inspectors find breaches.

Amengual also questions why the shoot is planned while the island council has taken steps to control pigeon populations because of damage the birds can cause to crops and urban areas. Progreso en Verde says it will consider further administrative and legal action to obtain information and report any possible breaches.
