Mallorca pipe burst puts Pollença water at risk

A pipe burst in Alcúdia, Mallorca, put Pollença’s drinking-water supply at risk on 11 July. The Balearic Water and Environmental Quality Agency, Abaqua, began emergency repairs immediately to keep water flowing. Supply restarted during the early hours of Sunday, with no restrictions imposed.

Pollença uses about 5,100 cubic metres of water a day, much of it carried through the damaged pipe. Its municipal reservoir capacity came under severe pressure before storage levels recovered on Monday.

The pipe, nearly half a metre across, runs through difficult-to-reach ground. The Balearic Government handled the repair as an emergency, and Abaqua initially arranged the work verbally so it could start without delay.

Abaqua is planning further work on the main pipe between Alcúdia’s desalination plant and the Pollença reservoir. The measures include keeping replacement parts ready, linking the pipe to another possible supply line, installing a pumping system to reduce pressure and repairing a one-kilometre section where breaks keep happening. The whole main pipe is due to be replaced in the future.
