PISA 2025: Balearic pupils trail Spain in core subjects
Fifteen-year-olds in Spain’s Balearic Islands score below the national average in maths, reading and science in the OECD’s PISA 2025 study. The results, released on 8 September, cover pupils taught under the LOMLOE education curriculum. In every area assessed, the islands rank among Spain’s five lowest-scoring autonomous communities.
Balearic pupils recorded 449 points in maths, against 457 across Spain. Their reading score was 441, compared with 451 nationally. In science, they reached 471 points, while Spain’s overall score was 477.
Problem-solving also below the national mark
In computer-based problem-solving, the Balearic Islands scored 497 points. Spain’s result was 498.
The islands were also below the averages for the European Union and the OECD in every assessed subject.
School belonging is lowest among Spain’s regions
PISA also measures pupils’ attitudes to learning, including curiosity, perseverance and whether they feel part of their school. The Balearic Islands came in below Spain’s average on those measures, though above the OECD average.
The islands had the lowest score of any Spanish autonomous community for school belonging. The measure reflects whether pupils feel integrated into, and connected with, their school. For this measure, the Balearic score remained above the European Union and OECD averages.
