Menorca's faith map: 43 Catholic sites, 17 others
Menorca, Spain, has 43 Catholic places of worship and 17 belonging to minority faiths: a study puts numbers to the island’s religious mix. The sites are spread across its municipalities. The Institut Menorquí d'Estudis funded the research, which its authors will present on Thursday.
Catholics remain the largest religious group on Menorca, but the study also records Muslim, evangelical, Buddhist, Orthodox, Anglican and Bahá’í communities, as well as Jehovah’s Witnesses. It looks beyond places of worship to the help religious groups provide. Cáritas Menorca, Manos Unidas and evangelical communities take part in support for vulnerable people and families, help with employment and international cooperation.
The book also examines the Cathedral of Menorca, the Virgen del Toro sanctuary and other parts of the island’s religious heritage. An appendix brings together agreements between public authorities and religious organisations from recent decades. Many were previously hard to access and had not been published together.
Authors Catalina Pons-Estel Tugores and Marcos González Sánchez will present the book at the Institut Menorquí d'Estudis. The study calls for continued work on coexistence, cooperation between institutions and protection of religious freedom.
