Formentera hospital resumes planned surgery after floods

Nine operations need new dates in Formentera, in the Balearic Islands: the island’s hospital resumes planned surgery on 4 November after October’s heavy rain and flooding. Urgent operations continued throughout the pause. The Pityusic Islands Health Area says the nine postponed, non-urgent procedures will take place in the coming days.

The Hospital of Formentera stopped planned operations as a precaution while staff cleaned the affected surgical area and checked it was safe. Samples taken on 23 October have now passed laboratory checks. The decision to restart follows guidance from the Preventive Medicine Service at Son Espases University Hospital.

More than 200 improvements have been made to the surgical unit since the severe storms of 11 and 12 October 2025. Many aim to keep water out in extreme weather; the health authority says water has not entered at the points where corrective work was done.

Formentera’s average wait for an operation is currently 67.2 days, compared with 92.5 days across the Balearic Islands, according to the health authority.
