Seven Mallorca break-ins: former worker held

Police in Palma have arrested a former employee over seven alleged forced break-ins at premises in Playa de Palma, Mallorca, between 19 August and 17 September. Officers detained him on Thursday after an inquiry into the raids. They had seen him around the businesses, asking staff about shift changes and closing times.

The first two incidents involved two premises. In one, cash was taken from the till after the main door was forced open with a lever. At the other, someone tried to cut through the bolt by the lock but did not get inside.

Two more premises were hit between the 13th and 14th of the month. Entry was gained through a rear sliding door and an internal door, with cash and a mobile phone taken. More than 20 bottles of alcohol disappeared on Wednesday, followed by 12 bottles of liqueur from two further premises on Thursday.

In a separate case, police arrested another man on Thursday over a break-in at a restaurant in Can Pastilla, Mallorca, early on Wednesday. The thieves forced a padlock and smashed two panes in a glass frontage before taking cash and bottles of alcohol. One suspect was found in Son Banya; police say that investigation remains open and further arrests are possible.
